The XXXIXth Rencontres de Moriond session devoted to the Young Local Universe will be held in La Thuile from Sunday March 21 to Sunday March 28, 2004.
La Thuile is a pleasant winter resort located in the Italian Alps, at 1450 m alt., about 120 km from Geneva. The nearest international airport is Geneva (Switzerland). If you arrive in Geneva International Airport, do not forget that you (especially citizens from Russia) may need a transit visa, coming through Switzerland to Italy .
Please note that the deadline for registration
is the February 15, 2004.

The purpose of these Rencontres de Moriond is to discuss recent findings and new ideas in galactic and extragalactic astrophysics in a pleasant, relaxed and intimate atmosphere. The meeting is intended to promote fruitful collaboration between instrumentalists, observers, and theoreticians from all over the world, by bringing together a limited number of participants in beautiful and inspiring surroundings.
The main goal of this meeting is to bring together researchers and students working on the "Young Local Universe", i.e. on the ISM and star formation from our Galaxy to nearby galaxies as far as molecular clouds and star-forming regions can be resolved by modern ground-based and space observatories. The main effort will be devoted to bring together in an "integrated" fashion participants from galactic and extragalactic backgrounds.
As a preliminary approach, the discussion will include galactic features such as the Gould Belt, the so-called Local Bubble and galactic HI bubbles, giant HII regions and galactic starburst-like regions of massive star formation, the Local Group (LMC, SMC, etc.), extragalactic bubbles, colliding galaxies and mergers (Antennae, etc.). The corresponding distances span a range of roughly six orders of magnitude, from 50 pc to 10-20 Mpc.
Theoretical issues among the following ones will also be covered: cloud core collapse, spiral structure, dynamics of central regions of galaxies, the role of metallicity and nucleosynthetic evolution, feedback effects from massive stars (winds, supernovae), interstellar turbulence and magnetic fields, irradiation effects by high-energy particles, triggered star formation, etc.
Future prospects include high-angular resolution and/or large instruments (adaptive optics, interferometers like ALMA and the VLTI, ELTs, space missions like JWST) and/or high spectral resolution instruments like Herschel, or XEUS, all approved or projected for the next decade. The first results expected from the ultra-violet and mid- to far-infrared space observatories GALEX and SIRTF will be highlighted.
The Young Local Universe is an international conference supported by the European Research and Training Network "Formation and Evolution of Young Stellar Clusters".
The "Young Local Universe" Conference is conceived as the first of three conferences, with the ultimate goal of studying in depth the connection between stellar and extragalactic astrophysics, and cosmology. The three week-long conferences will take place as Moriond Astrophysics Meetings, as follows:
2004 - Episode I - The Young Local Universe
2005 - Episode II - The Hidden Side of Galaxy Formation
2006 - Episode III - Large-Scale Structures and Galaxy Formation
It is expected that at least a fraction of the participants will attend two of these meetings, or possibly all of them.
T. Montmerle (Chair), J. Bouvier, A. Chalabaev, B. Lefloch (LAOG,Grenoble); R. Neri (IRAM); D. Elbaz, M. Sauvage (CEA/DAPNIA/SAp, Saclay); J. Tran Thanh Van (LPT, Orsay); Ph. André (Saclay); M. McCaughrean (Potsdam); et D. Galli (Firenze).
J. Alves (ESO), D. Breitschwerdt (Vienna), C. Cesarsky (ESO),
F. Combes (Paris), Y. Fukui (Kyoto), T. Heckman (Baltimore),
T.Henning (Heidelberg), V. Icke (Leiden), J. Knödlseder (Toulouse),
D. Kunth (Paris), A. Maeder (Geneva), F. Palla (Florence), M. Tagger
(Saclay), H. Zinnecker (Potsdam).
The detailed program of the meeting will be established according to the latest results at the time of the meeting. Participants who wish to present contributed papers are requested to submit their title and abstract to the Conference web site (http://www-laog.obs.ujf-grenoble.fr/ylu/, or http://moriond.in2p3.fr) as soon as possible. Oral contributions will be selected by the organizers. Space will be available for posters.
The speakers are kindly asked to write their slides or transparencies in BIG letters, preferably covering the upper 2/3 of the screen.
Proceedings of the conference will be published. Instructions will be
distributed during the Rencontres.
Further information can be obtained by sending an e-mail to: firstname.lastname@example.org.
The meeting will start on Sunday, March 21, 2004 at 18:00 and will end on Sunday, March 28 at 12:30.
The following equipment will be available:
- slide projector for 5cm x 5cm slides
- overhead projector for transparencies
- projector for computer presentations
Speakers can bring their computer presentations on their own laptops; or alternatively on CD-ROMs or USB flash memories for the Moriond laptop.
Limited internet connections will be available from the hotel. In particular, a wireless hub will be installed.
Speakers are requested to bring a good photocopy of their talk. This copy will be kept for display. In order to make their transparencies or slides available on the web, speakers who have their talk in file format (PowerPoint, PDF, Postscript, HTML…) are invited to send them by e-mail as an attached file (in compressed form; limiting size 5 Mb) to the conference account (email@example.com), with a short comment to identify the file (title of the talk, authors, etc.)
The registration fee for the conference is 330 Euro. It will cover the costs of the Proceedings and of all social events for the whole week, from Sunday to Sunday.
Payment can be made:
(i) before the conference by bank transfer (add 22 Euros for bank fees) to Moriond bank account:
- Banque de Savoie, Place de l'Hotel de Ville, 73700
Bourg St Maurice, France.
- ADREMOR - Bank Code 10 548, Branch 00013, Account 00047 135 153, key 67, Swift Code : BSAVFR2C
In this case, the transfer should clearly indicate your name to
identify the payment. The corresponding voucher should imperatively be
handed on the conference site.
(ii) on the conference site by traveler's checks or personal checks in Euro to the order of "Rencontres de Moriond", handed to the secretariat upon your arrival or within the first 2 days of the workshop. Please avoid cash payment if possible. Credit cards are not accepted.
Although several applications have been sent to obtain financial help from various institutions, the results are not known at this time. We nevertheless hope to be able to help students or junior researchers, by waiving the registration fees and/or the living expenses. Also in the tradition of Moriond, we expect in contrast senior researchers to participate in helping young colleagues by providing a full payment for their registration fees and living expenses. Should our financial requests be very successful, we may be able to provide additional help. Note that travel expenses cannot be reimbursed.
Housing will be in Hotel Planibel, La Thuile. Meals will be served in this hotel for all participants.
The hotel bill shall be paid directly to the hotel. Credit card payment (for the hotel accommodation only) can be accepted.
The cost (full board) will amount to 504 Euro (double occupancy).
It will be difficult to obtain single rooms. Only a few will be available at an additional cost of 140 Euro.
Single rooms should be reserved before February 15, 2004.
For accompanying persons, the costs are as follows:
