XXXXth RENCONTRES DE MORIOND

XXVth MORIOND ASTROPHYSICS MEETING

WHEN UV MEETS IR: A HISTORY OF STAR FORMATION

BULLETIN No 1

I. PLACE AND DATE

The XXXXth Moriond Workshop will be held in La Thuile , Italy, from Sunday March 6th to Saturday March 12th 2005. It will be devoted to WHEN UV MEETS IR: A HISTORY OF STAR FORMATION.

La Thuile is a is a pleasant winter sports resort located the Italian Alps, at 1450 m alt., about 120 km from Geneva.

The nearest international airport is Geneva (Switzerland). If you arrive in Geneva international airport, do not forget that you may need a transit visa, coming through Switzerland to Italy (this is certainly the case for Russian and Korean participants).

Postal address of the meeting:

Please begin your fax with: To the attention of Rencontres de Moriond.

II. PURPOSE OF THE RENCONTRES

The purpose of the Rencontres de Moriond is to discuss recent findings and new ideas in astrophysics in a pleasant, relaxed and intimate atmosphere. The meeting intends to promote fruitful collaboration between various communities and between various institutes by bringing together a small number of scientists in beautiful and inspiring surroundings.

III. SCIENTIFIC ORGANIZATION

1. Program

The topics which will be discussed include:

2. Program Committee

D. Elbaz (chairman, Saclay), H.Aussel (co-chairman, Saclay), P.-A. Duc (Saclay), V. Buat (Marseille), D. Burgarella (Marseille), H. Dole (Orsay), E. Le Floc'h (Tucson), D. Kunth (Paris), T. Montmerle (Grenoble), L. Tresse (Marseille), M. Treyer (Marseille), J. Trân Thanh Vân (Orsay).

3. Scientific Advisory Committee

C. Cesarsky (Garching), F. Combes (Paris), S. Charlot (Paris), V. Charmandaris (Ithaca), M. Dickinson (Tucson), A. Franceschini (Padova), U. Fritze-Alvensleben (Göttingen), B. Guiderdoni (Paris), F. Hammer (Meudon), G. Helou (Pasadena), Ch. Martin (Pasadena), J-L. Puget (Orsay), G. Rieke (Tucson), D. Schiminovich (Pasadena), L. Vigroux (Saclay).

4. Scientific overview

Over the past two years, two new space observatories, GALEX and Spitzer, sampling the two ends of the optical window, enabled us to further our knowledge in extragalactic astrophysics in an unprecedented way. In the IR, following on the discoveries of ISO, Spitzer now routinely probes the physical properties of the dust in galaxies at z~2 as well as samples the stellar population ou to z~7. Our knowledge of these objects from ground-based observations, though detailed, has been so far inferred using mainly their rest-frame optical/UV characteristics. The surveys currently performed in the UV with GALEX are about to revolutionize our understanding in this domain and fine tune its diagnostic power on massive star formation. We propose to explore the synergy of the two fields during a constructive meeting in the Italian Alps.

5. Contributions

The detailed program of the meeting will be established according to the latest experimental and theoretical results at the time of the meeting. Participants who wish to present new results are requested to send an abstract of their proposed presentation through the Contribution Form as soon as possible (before January 31st 2005 at the latest). Due to limitation of time, only a restricted number of talks can be accepted.
According to the tradition of the Rencontres de Moriond, a large amount of time will be reserved for both organized and spontaneous discussions. Hence all participants are expected to play an active role during the entire meeting. Please remember that we make a special effort to bring together theorists and experimenters: theoretical talks should be prepared with experimenters in the audience in mind, and experimental talks should likewise be aimed at theorists.

Proceedings of the conference will be published. Instructions will be distributed during the Rencontres. Deadline for contributions will be May 15th 2005.

IV. PRACTICAL ORGANIZATION

1. Conference Dates

The meeting will begin on Sunday March 6th 2005 at 18h00 and will end on Saturday 12th at 9h00.

2. Conference facilities

The following equipment will be available: a projector for computer presentations, an overhead projector for transparencies and a slide projector for 5cm x 5cm slides. Speakers can bring their presentations on their laptops (while the compatibility of such devices has improved recently, we ask you to bring a back up copy for overhead projector).

3. Transparencies

The transparencies will be posted on the web just after the conference, in their original format (.ppt, .pdf, .ps, .doc) or only in .pdf if requested.
