XXXVIIIth RENCONTRES DE MORIOND

MORIOND WORKSHOP ON

Radioactive beams for nuclear physics and neutrino physics

BULLETIN N 1

I. PLACE AND DATE

The XXXVIIIth Moriond Workshop will be held in Les Arcs 1800, Savoie, France, Monday, 17 to saturday March 22, 2003. It will be devoted to Radioactive beams for nuclear physics and neutrino physics .

Les Arcs 1800 is a pleasant winter sports resort located in the French Alps, at 1800 m alt., about 120 km from Geneva and 16 km from Bourg-Saint-Maurice. The nearest railway station is Bourg-Saint-Maurice: trains (TGV) from Paris to Bourg-Saint-Maurice are quite convenient.

The nearest international airports are Geneva (Switzerland) and Lyon Saint Exupéry (France). If you arrive in Geneva international airport, do not forget that you may need a transit visa, coming through Switzerland to France.

II. PURPOSE OF THE RENCONTRES

The purpose of the Rencontres de Moriond is to discuss recent findings and new ideas in various areas of fundamental physics in a pleasant, relaxed and intimate atmosphere. This meeting intends to promote fruitful collaboration between different communities (machine scientists, nuclear physicists and neutrino physicists)by bringing together a small number of participants in beautiful and inspiring surroundings.

2. Program

This workshop will explore for the first time the synergies between projects in nuclear physics (Eurisol) and neutrino physics (SPL + beta beams), both interested in the production of high intensity beams of radioactive nuclei.
This workshop will address nuclei production, acceleration and related machine issues, as well as physics requirements and potentialities. It is intended to bring together machine physicists and engineers, nuclear physicists and neutrino physicists.
It will hopefully converge towards common R&D proposals eligible for european "technical design studies" funding under FP6.
The 4 day programme is organized as follows:

3. Contributions

If you wish to make a contribution which fits in the framework of the program, please indicate it in the registration form.

Typical contributions are of 15 minutes duration or less. However, we may not have enough time for everyone to give a talk and we apologize for this in advance.

Speakers are kindly asked to write their transparencies in BIG letters and preferably on the upper 2/3 of the sheet.

IV. PRACTICAL ORGANIZATION

1. Workshop schedule

Participants wishing to attend the first 2 days of the electroweak session, devoted to neutrinos, on sunday 16th and monday 17th should indicate it on the registration form. They are then expected to arrive on saturday, march 15th in the afternoon.

2. Conference facilities

The following equipment will be available: a slide projector for 5cm x 5cm slides, an overhead projector for transparencies and a projector for computer presentations. Speakers can bring their presentations on their laptops (while the compatibility of such devices has improved recently, we ask you to bring a back up copy for overhead projector).

3. Copies of transparencies

In order to make transparencies of the workshop available on the web, speakers who have their talks in file format (Powerpoint, PDS, Postscript, HTML...) are invited to send them by email to :

Jacques Bouchez

Speakers are requested to bring a good photocopy of the transparencies of their talk. This copy will be kept for display.

4. Conference Fee

The conference fee is 315 Euros. It will cover the cost of all social events.

Payment can be made:

Please avoid cash payment if possible. If you have to change money please note that the exchange rate at Bourg Saint Maurice is less advantageous than in cities like Paris or Geneva.

Credit cards are not accepted.

b) From Bourg-St-Maurice train station to Les Arcs 1800 (Charmettoger)

Regular buses are available from Bourg-St-Maurice train station to Les Arcs 1800 at most train arrivals from Paris.(45 minutes drive) Cost approx. : 8/9 Euros (luggage included). Please ask for a ticket "Les Arcs-Villard". The last one leaves at 19 h 15. Taxis: approximate fare 39/49 Euros (depending on the number of persons and pieces of luggage).

c) From Geneva Airport to Les Arcs 1800

On saturday 15th, it is recommended, as much as possible, to take the first conference bus, or if you go by car, to leave Geneva before 12h00 . Experience has shown that traffic jams can be terrible if one leaves Geneva after 14h.

With Conference buses (only available on saturday 15th): departure from Geneva International Airport. At the arrival level, ground floor, take the exit " gate n3 " just in front of the customs, cross a car-park and you will be just in front of the bus. It will be waiting in the bus car-park, with RENCONTRES DE MORIOND posters on the windows.
On Saturday, March 15th: the first bus will leave at 12h30 and the other one will leave at 13h30 sharp.
There will be no conference buses on monday 17th, we apologize for that.

If you miss the conference buses or arrive on monday, please note that there are also regular buses for les Arcs 1800. Change in Bourg Saint Maurice. Duration : about 3 hours. Price : 62 Euros one way. You can find the timetable and make reservation on www.alpski-bus.com .

Return conference buses are scheduled to leave les Arcs 1800 on saturday, march 22nd at 12h00 sharp (after lunch) and will reach Geneva airport and then CERN (if requested) around 16h00, depending on the traffic.

d) From Lyon-Saint Exupéry airport to Bourg Saint Maurice

e) By car

Les Arcs 1800 can be easily reached by car, by the A43 highway to Albertville, then by the N90 to Bourg-St-Maurice (via Moutiers), and then direction Les Arcs 1800 (16 km). If chains are necessary, the sooner you mount them, the better (in Bourg-St-Maurice). In Les Arcs, the temperature can easily go down to - 20 C, so make sure you have sufficient antifreeze.

7. Miscellaneous

a) There are 2 "Hotel Latitudes" in Les Arcs. Be sure that you go to the Latitudes-Charmettoger, at the end of the resort Charmettoger.

b) The temperature in Les Arcs varies between - 20 and + 5 C. The ground is often icy and it is important to bring suitable walking shoes and warm clothes.

b) Ski and boot rental is available at the Hotel (special discount for Moriond participants)

c) If you fly to Geneva airport and your luggage is missing on your arrival, when making your claim ask for your luggage to be forwarded to you to the Hotel Latitudes-Charmettoger in Les Arcs 1800 by taxi, as quite a few Moriond participants have had their suitcases "stuck" in Bourg-St-Maurice by bus companies.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

Please note that your reply to the committee member who sent you the invitation is not considered as a registration. Registration for your attendance to the worshop and hotel reservation will only be made on receipt of the registration form.

Please return your registration form as soon as possible !

If it is not received by February 13th, 2003,
we may not be able to get hotel reservation for you.
